1. Proper Loading and Filling

  • Don’t Overfill: Leave some space at the top of the basket. Overfilling can lead to anode material spilling into the tank.
  • Ensure Good Contact: The anode material inside must make good electrical contact with the basket mesh. After filling, gently tap or shake the basket to help the material settle and ensure there are no large voids.
  • Maintain Fill Level: Regularly top up the baskets to maintain a consistent anode level. This is key to achieving a stable surface area and uniform current distribution.

2. Avoid “Bridging”

“Bridging” occurs when the anode material fuses together into a solid mass, often due to excessively high current density. This mass can lose electrical contact with the basket, rendering it ineffective.

  • How to Prevent It: Avoid operating at excessively high amperages. Regularly agitate the baskets (carefully lifting and dropping them a few inches) to break up any incipient bridging and resettle the anode material.

3. Cleanliness of Anode and Basket

  • Use Clean Anode Material: Always use high-purity anode material free from grease, oils, or other contaminants that could foul your plating bath.
  • Regular Cleaning of the Passive Film: Over time, the conductive oxide film on the titanium can become built up or “filmed over” with solution byproducts. Periodically, the basket should be removed, rinsed, and lightly cleaned with a stiff bristle brush (non-metallic) to restore optimal conductivity. Avoid aggressive sandblasting or grinding, which can damage the basket.

  • Avoid Mechanical Damage: While titanium is strong, the mesh can be damaged if the basket is dropped or mishandled. Dents can create areas of poor contact with the anode material. Damaged welds can lead to electrical failure.
  • Inspect Welds and Hooks: Periodically inspect the hooks and the welds connecting them to the basket body. Look for any signs of cracking or overheating (discoloration), which could indicate a poor electrical connection or an undersized hook.

  • Regular Cleaning: Anode bags will become clogged with anode sludge and filtered particles over time. This restricts solution flow and can lead to polarization. Clean or replace your anode bags as part of a regular preventive maintenance schedule.
